Influence of magnetic field on microstructure and properties of TiC/cobalt-based composite plasma cladding coating

In order to obtain better quality metallurgical coating, magnetic field technology is selected to combine with plasma cladding. In this study, TiC reinforced Co matrix composite layers were fabricated by plasma cladding with the influence of magnetic field. The effects of magnetic field on microstructure, phase composition, tribological behavior and erosion wear behavior of the coating were studied. Results indicate that the regular coating structure was observed with the effect of magnetic field, namely, the dendrites with the same orientation and fine equiaxed grains distribute in longitudinal magnetic field and transverse magnetic field coating, respectively. The TiC particles are refined and dispersive under the influence of magnetic field. The composite coating mainly consists of γ-Co, TiC, Fe-Cr and [Fe,Ni] phase, but the new phase TiC-(Ti,W)C1 â x is detected in magnetic field coatings. The fine microstructure, the refined and dispersive TiC and the new phase TiC-(Ti,W)C1 â x lead to the higher anti-wear and anti-erosion properties in magnetic field coatings.
