The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change: A global scale transformative initiative

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was established in 1988 by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The role of the IPCC “is to assess on a comprehensive, open and transparent basis the scientific, technical and socio-economic information relevant to understanding the scientific basis of risk of human-induced climate change, its potential impacts and options for adaptation and mitigation.” This paper discusses the working of the IPCC and at least five ways in which the IPCC can be viewed as an amazingly successful transformative initiative. The IPCC is a model for the futures community, for it is helping not only to transform our conceptions of time and our concerns about the future, but also the conduct, organization, and use of science around the world.
