This paper eliminates the step of rotation generation to allow the crew recovery problem to be dealt with directly in relation to flight legs. A duty based GA model with a dynamic leg binding mechanism is developed to solve the crew recovery problem. This is about hundred times faster than the traditional process, a feature possible by introducing the original crew schedule as the initial solution. This model is applied to an international airline in Taiwan and the results compared to previous studies.
► We model a potentially more efficient way of handling an airline’s crew recovery problem.
► It eliminates the rotation generation to deal with flight legs directly.
► We develop a duty based model with a dynamic leg binding mechanism to solve the problem.
► We apply the model to an international airline in Taiwan and compares the results with earlier studies.
