Matching optical fiber lifetime and bend-loss limits for optimized local loop fiber storage

A joint approach applying a fiber lifetime model and extensive bend loss tests reveals that lifetime and bend-loss limits start to coincide for short length optical fiber storage for a constant curvature radius below 15 mm. This is less than 50% of the currently accepted curvature limit. Optimized fiber designs, both with respect to lifetime and bending behavior allow for even smaller bending radii in the sub cm range. This enables the introduction of the required dimensional reduction in local loop outside plant fiber management components. In addition, it supports to withstand the rugged installation practices which are essential for the local loop mass market. For the smallest bending radii, new international fiber standard development for single mode fiber may be required. For multimode fiber networks similar low bending radii can be achieved applying the appropriate laser sources and taking into account the network topology.
