► Direct synthesis route was developed for metal oxide incorporated SBA-15 (M-SBA-15). ► M-SBA-15 based electrodes were used for the non-enzymatic glucose sensing. ► Cu-SBA-15 exhibited higher electrocatalytic activity than conventional CuO.
