Novel, highly selective gold nanoparticle patterning on surfaces using pure water

► A simple novel method to locally adsorb gold nanoparticles is presented. ► Water treatment of mercaptosilane monolayers leads to 'deactivation' of thiol groups. ► A remarkably high degree of selectivity in deposited nanoparticles is demonstrated.
