► Photoliable molecule-modified chitosan was developed for selective cell attachment. ► Two illuminations and the following immobilizations help create surface heterogeneity. ► Cell attachment can be controlled by the heterogeneity of surface cues. ► Fibroblast cells enable to form cell pattern on the designed surface.
