► N-substitution in 1,3-benzoxazine-2,4-dione accelerates the rate of alkaline hydrolysis. ► Surfactants with greater hydrophobicity have more influence on the rate of hydrolysis. ► The hydrolysis can also be inhibited by the addition of salts.
