A near-infrared optoelectronic approach to detection of road conditions

► We report on an optical approach for testing the road conditions. ► The system is based on measuring the polarization contrast of reflected light. ► We test various types of asphalt and thicknesses of water and ice layers. ► The system allows the recognition of dry asphalt, water, wet and with ice.
