► The unfolding of a relationship context influences how actors adopt and adapt communication practices. ► Actors use different communication media to achieve different tasks, at different times throughout the relationship. ► Actors deliberately break communication norms in order reshape the relationships. ► Communication artifacts are interpreted and reinterpreted across the different forms of time and space. ► Different temporal forms are privileged to inform actors' communication practices as actors make task-media fit judgments.
