An environmental assessment of risk in achieving good environmental status to support regional prioritisation of management in Europe

► We present a risk framework for assessing ecological objectives of the MSFD. ► The method was used to assess GES descriptors in the four European regional seas. ► The approach allows for regional comparison of environmental issues. ► Results inform prioritisation of management for the MSFD. ► With modification criteria could be applied to assess other objectives.
