Studies directed towards the total synthesis of koshikalide: stereoselective synthesis of the macrocyclic core

Starting with the readily available 1,4-butanediol, d,l-malic acids as a synthons, the stereoselective synthesis of the macrolactone core of natural product, koshikalide is described.
