Hamiltonian structure of reduced fluid models for plasmas obtained from a kinetic description

► We investigate fluid reductions from the Vlasov-Maxwell Poisson bracket. ► The only Poisson subalgebra involves fluid density and fluid velocity. ► The bracket derived in [B.A. Shadwick, G.M. Tarkenton, E.H. Esarey, Phys. Rev. Lett. 93 (2004) 175002] is not Hamiltonian.
