Analysis of the phase lapse problem in closed interferometers

► The sign of the Fano parameters - for a ring + dot system - carries the important information on the “bare” dot transmission phase lapses. ► It is proposed that the Fano effect can also be used to map the phase distribution of the eigenmodes for an arbitrary mesoscopic shape. ► The results are generalized to the interacting case, and the conclusions hold.
