Controlled optical properties of a five-level atom embedded in photonic crystals with defect modes

► Optical properties of an atom embedded in a PC with defect modes are investigated. ► Transparency, large amplification, and anomalous dispersion properties are observed. ► The results provide more degrees of freedom to vary the optical spectra of atoms. ► It has many potential applications, e.g., in optical switches and optical amplifier.
