Optimized t-expansion method for the Rabi Hamiltonian

► We study the ground state energy of the Rabi Hamiltonian. ► We use the t-expansion method with an optimized trial function. ► High accuracy of estimates is achieved, the relative error being smaller than 0.01%. ► The calculation of the first excited state energy is made. The method has a general applicability.
