► We have examined the dynamics of SSEA3 expression in human ES and EC cells. ► We assessed the relationship between SSEA3 expression and neural differentiation. ► Cells exhibiting differing SSEA3 expression possess distinct differentiation characteristics. ► SSEA3 expression can be used to predict dynamics of human ES neural differentiation.
