A case of adoption and allonursing in captive plains zebra (Equus burchellii)

▶ This is the first report on adoption and allonursing in captive plains zebra. ▶ The suckling bout durations were shorter when mare nursed two foals than single foal. ▶ The allonursing mare did not discriminate between the filial and non-filial foal. ▶ The observed allonursing could be part of reciprocal altruism.
