The article sketches the relationships of members of the Sontsov family with people of their time (mid 19th century), mainly in literary circles. A.A. Sontsov was an important government official, eventually governor of the Tauride Province, who, as was his daughter Sophia, was on friendly terms with literary figures such as Ia. Polonskii, V. Benediktov and N. Shcherbina. The article discloses that Sophia was involved with the German socialist Ferdinand Lassalle and was behind the anonymous publication of their correspondence, including a “confession” by Lassalle, in the journal Vestnik Evropy in 1877. Sophia later married the doctor N. Arendt, who became one of the Russian pioneers of (the theory) of aviation.
