Independence and inter-dependence: Household formation patterns in eighteenth century Kythera, Greece

► Nuclear households were the dominant form of households. ► Neolocality was the rule resulting in residential independence for most newly married couples. ► This was not a stem family situation. ► Economic links between the father and his married sons - and hence their households -were strong while the father was alive. ► The inheritance system did not shape the household formation system.
