Matière à spéculer : les produits laitiers saisis par l’écrit

RésuméCet article s’attache à décrire le travail de spéculateurs en produits laitiers. Il expose le travail, cognitif et matériel, qui permet à ces acteurs de faire face à l’extension de leur espace d’action mais aussi à la contraction de la temporalité de ce dernier, deux dynamiques caractéristiques du processus de financiarisation tel qu’il est aujourd’hui à l’œuvre sur certains marchés agricoles internationaux. À distance de certains travaux critiques de la finance qui actent d’un découplage entre la « sphère financière » et l’« économie réelle », il donne à voir, grâce à une attention particulière portée aux supports graphiques utilisés, des acteurs attentifs à la matérialité des produits qu’ils manipulent, et ce malgré la distanciation croissante, tant cognitive que géographique, qu’ils entretiennent avec la cible de leur action.

This article seeks to describe the work of dairy products speculators. It reveals the effort, cognitive and material, that enables these actors to handle the widening of their range of action, but also the contraction in the timescale of that action, two dynamics characteristic of the financialization process currently underway in certain international agricultural markets. In contrast with certain works critical of finance, which report a decoupling of the “financial sphere” from the “real economy”, it reveals – through close attention to the graphic media employed – agents who are aware of the materiality of the products they manipulate, despite their growing distanciation, both cognitive and geographical, from the target of their activity.
