• A facile and versatile N-sulfonylation of amines, imides, amides and anilides using p-TsCl under sonic condition is reported.
• The reaction works well with catalytic amounts of atomized sodium in EtOH–THF.
• The method is rapid, simple, convenient and is efficient.
• Ultrasound enhances the rate of the reaction and gives products in very high yields.
• The merits of the strategy are minimization of waste and ease of product isolation.
A simple, facile and an efficient procedure for the N-sulfonylation of amines, imides, amides and anilides using p-TsCl in the presence of atomized sodium in a mixture of EtOH–THF under sonic condition is developed. The method is rapid, mild and inexpensive; yields are high and the reactions go to completion within 2–8 min.
