Addition of an aqueous methanol solution of nickel(II) acetate tetrahydrate into a methanol solution of the tridentate Schiff base, 3-(methylamino)propyliminomethylphenol (HL), resulted in the solid-state isolation of an octahedral nickel(II) complex [Ni(L)2]·3H2O, where lattice water molecules formed hydrogen-bonded water tetramers, which were connected among themselves to form a T4(1) tape. The tape, stabilized by hydrogen bonding interactions with the nickel(II) complex, was characterized by X-ray diffraction studies, FTIR, and thermo-gravimetric (TG) analyses. When thermally decomposed, the water loss was irreversible.
