The organic macrocycle 5, 10, 15, 20-tetra-(p-hydroxy)phenylporphyrin (THPP), which is covalently bonded to inorganic silica networks, is used as the main sensitizer for synthesizing novel near-infrared (NIR) luminescent Ln-THPP-Si (Ln = Nd, Yb) hybrid materials. The structures and photophysical properties of obtained materials are studied in detail. Upon excitation at the maximum absorption of ligands, the resultant materials displayed characteristic near-infrared luminescence. These considerations show that interesting materials with potential applications in fluoroimmuno-assays, optical amplification and catalysis can be obtained.
