• We have synthesized a new hybrid polyoxometalate — containing lanthanide complexes.
• We report a structural study of good quality for the synthesized phase.
• Hexamolybdate and α-octamolybdate isomer are used as building blocks.
• Synthesized compound have potential optical properties.
A novel mixed isopolymolybdates functionalized by rare earth complexes namely, [Eu(dmso)8] [Eu(η2-NO3)2(dmso)4(α-Mo8O26)0.5][Mo6O19] (1) has been successfully synthesized by the step method and characterized by UV–visible spectroscopy, single crystal molecular structure and photoluminescence. The title compound crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system (P21/n space group) with the cell parameters a = 19.6321 (7) Å, b = 20.0301 (8) Å, c = 20.2055 (10) Å and β = 95.3885 (17)°.Within the crystal structure of (1), the europium complexes form a grid-like network where are located the Lindqvist type-[Mo6O19]2 − polyanion. The structure cohesion is ensured by S ⋯ O and non-conventional hydrogen bonding interactions leading to a 3D supramolecular network. Absorption spectrum, optical band gap energies as well as photoluminescence properties of titled rare earth complexes have been investigated. The CIE chromaticity coordinates reveal that this compound is a promising orange-reddish luminophore that can be used in many technology applications.
