• The crystals were grown by single gel diffusion technique.

Single crystals of a novel 1D coordination polymer, [Ca9(μ–H2O)9(picolinate)18]·4H2O were grown by single gel diffusion technique. Sodium metasilicate was used for gel preparation. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal that the compound crystallizes in triclinic space group Pī. The crystal possesses a large asymmetric unit with bridging picolinate ligands and water molecules. The 1D chain like structure constructs a 2D supramolecular architecture via the hydrogen bonding interactions. The grown crystals were further characterized by elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction study, FT-IR and UV–Visible spectral studies. The luminescent behaviour of the ligand and the complex was also investigated.
