• Highly crystalline layered mixed metal fluorides obtained by green mechanochemical synthesis.
• AA′CuF4 (A = K and A′ = Rb) has been realized for the first time.
• Transformation of 2D layered structure to crystalline AMF3 aided by the mechanical activation.
• Room temperature Raman spectrum of K2MgF4 has been presented for the first time.
A simple and green mechanochemical synthesis of layered perovskite structure type fluorides, A2MF4 (A = K, Rb; M = Co, Cu, Mg), from the stoichiometric reaction of their respective metal fluorides at room temperature using an agate pestle and mortar has been studied. The phases, so formed, were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy techniques. Formation of 2D layered structure and its transformation to crystalline AMF3 structural arrangement was observed possibly induced by the mechanical activation.
