• Layered anatase TiO2 nanocrystals are synthesized by hydrothermal method.
• The layered structure will disappear with the growth of TiO2 nanocrystals.
• Crystal-intercalated TMAH are contributed to the formation of layered TiO2.
• Raman and luminescence spectra are sensitive to the crystalline of layered TiO2.
Layered nanostructured TiO2 was synthesized by hydrothermal method operated at 125 °C in the presence of TMAH. TMAH acted as a capping agent to Ti precursor and intercalated into the layered nanostructured TiO2. Phase transition from layered nanostructure to anatase phase occurred over the hydrothermal reaction time. DLS size analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, FT-IR spectroscopy, thermo-gravimetric analysis, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and luminescence spectroscopy have been used to characterize the resulting nanostructured TiO2. The intercalation and decomposition process of TMAH in TiO2 was studied. A proposed growth mechanism is given to demonstrate the formation of layered nanostructures. Layered nanostructured TiO2 showed different optical properties from the anatase type TiO2 nanoparticles.
