The mammalian sulfated glycolipid sulfatide: Synthesis and biological implications

Sulfatide is one of the most relevant endogenous acidic glycolipids found in mammal membranes, ubiquitously present in various tissues. The review will briefly introduce the physiopathological role of sulfatide, then focusing mainly on synthetic aspects related to the preparation of this molecule and of analogues thereof, as tools to better understand its biological role, its involvement in pathogenesis and to stimulate the research towards development of new derivatives for biomedical applications.

RésuméLe sulfatide est un des plus importants glycolipides acides endogènes, repéré dans les membranes des mammifères et ubiquitaire dans beaucoup de tissus. Cette revue introduit brièvement le rôle physiopathologique du sulfatide pour ensuite discuter plus en détail les aspects synthétiques liés à la préparation de cette molécule et de ses analogues, comme outils pour mieux connaître son rôle biologique, son implication dans la pathogenèse et pour stimuler la recherche vers le développement de nouveaux dérivés pour applications biomédicales.
