Synthesis and structural characterization of the neutral pentagonal-prismatic Co11Te7(CO)10 cluster in a matrix of [Cp′4Nb2(CH3Te)Te]I (Cp′ = tBuC5H4)

Reaction of the LiCH3-reduced Cp′2Nb(η2-Te2)H (Cp′ = tBuC5H4) with Co2(CO)8 and subsequent treatment of the obtained mixture of cluster compounds with 3 equiv of CH3I gave the neutral complex {Cp′2Nb(CO)}2[Co9Te6(CO)8] (2), a mixture of salts containing the [Co9Te6(CO)8]– anion (3) and [Cp′4Nb2(μ-CH3Te)μ-Te]I[Co11Te7(CO)10] (5). Complex 2 was identified by comparison of spectroscopic data with known data, whereas recrystallization of 3 from THF gave a few crystals of known [Na(THF)6][Co9Te6(CO)8] (4). ESI mass spectrometry and X-ray diffraction analysis of compound 5 show that the salt [Cp′4Nb2Te2CH3]I forms a matrix containing the neutral cluster [Co11Te7(CO)10], which has only limited stability in the free state. RésuméLa réaction de Cp′2Nb(η2-Te2)H (Cp′ = tBuC5H4) réduit au LiCH3 avec Co2(CO)8, suivie du traitement du mélange de clusters ainsi obtenu par 3 équivalents de CH3I, a conduit au complexe neutre {Cp′2Nb(CO)}2[Co9Te6(CO)8] (2), à un mélange de sels contenant l′anion [Co9Te6(CO)8]– (3) et à [Cp′4Nb2(μ-CH3Te)μ-Te]I[Co11Te7(CO)10] (5). Le complexe 2 a été identifié par comparaison de ses données spectroscopiques avec la bibliographie et la recristallisation de 3 dans le THF a donné quelques cristaux du composé connu [Na(THF)6][Co9Te6(CO)8] (4). La spectroscopie de masse (ESI) et l′analyse par diffraction des rayons X du composé 5 a montré que le sel [Cp′4Nb2Te2CH3]I forme une matrice contenant le cluster neutre [Co11Te7(CO)10], dont la stabilité intrinsèque est limitée.
