► Local heat transfer distribution of liquid sodium flow in an annulus has been investigated. ► The radial temperature distributions of the liquid sodium are more uniform than water. ► Turbulence influenced on the heat transfer characteristics of inlet region mainly. ► Gap size has great influence on heat transfer of the whole flow region of the annulus.
