Despite being a good first step, super-insulated, high thermal mass building envelopes and passive technologies can only go part way to achieving building targets set by governments in many countries; active renewable energies will be needed too, and Buildings will have to become their own power generators. But what technologies will be ready and mature enough to enable this, asks George Marsh?
