• Novel porphyrin Schiff base ligands and their transition metal complexes were synthesized.
• The 1931 CIE (x,y) chromaticity coordinates of the ligands and their metal complexes are close to the very deep red color.
• The ligands showed selective chemosensor properties for Hg2+ ion.
• Superoxide dismutase activity of the complexes were investigated.
This paper reports synthesis and characterization of the novel asymmetric porphyrin Schiff base ligands (HL1-HL3) and their Cu(II), Fe(III), Mn(III) and Zn(II) complexes. The ligands and their metal complexes were characterized by elemental analyses, 1H(13C)NMR, MALDI-TOF mass, FTIR and UV–vis methods. Absorption values of the ligands and their metal complexes shifted to longer wavelength in the solid state. The sensor properties of the ligands against the metal ions were studied by the photoluminescence and UV–vis spectroscopies. All ligands showed the fluorescence chemosensor property for the detection of Hg+2 ion in the solution. Additionally, the superoxide dismutase activities and electrochemical properties of the metal complexes were investigated. The 1931 CIE (x,y) chromaticity coordinates of the ligands and their metal complexes were investigated and the x, y values of the compounds were found to be close to the National Television Standard Committee (NTSC) standard.
