A series of chiral coordination polymers constructed by (S)-(-)-1,1′-binaphtho-2,2′-diacetic acid: Syntheses, structures and optical properties

• These complexes display diversified coordination modes of L anions.
• The red-shift of the luminescence may be ascribed to the coordination of metal ions with the ligand.
• The second harmonic generations of complexes 4, 6 and 8 are about 0.17, 0.08 and 0.10 times as that of KDP.

A series of chiral coordination polymers, namely, {[Zn3(L)3(H2O)3]·H2O}n (1), [Cu2(L)2]n (2), [Cd3(L)3(H2O)2]n (3), [Zn2(L)2(4,4′-bipy)2]n (4), [Cu2(L)2(4,4′-bipy)2]n (5), {[Zn(L)(biim-4)]·H2O}n (6), [Cu(L)(biim-4)]n (7) and [Zn3(L)3(btb)(H2O)2]n (8–10) (H2L = (S)-(-)-1,1′-binaphtho-2,2′-diacetic acid, 4,4′-bipy = 4,4′-bipyridine, biim-4 = 1,1′-(1,4-butanediyl)bis(imidazole) and btb = 1,6-bis(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)hexane) have been synthesized under hydro/solvothermal conditions. In complexes 1–3, L anions bridge Zn(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) cations to form one dimensional (1D) chains, respectively. The structures of complexes 4 and 5 are isomorphous, in which metal ions are bridged by 4,4′-bipy ligands to furnish 1D columns with L branches. Complex 6 displays a 3D diamond topology. Complex 7 features an undulated sheet with two types of helical chains. Complexes 8–10 possess similar layer structures, but show different stacking modes. Complexes 4, 6 and 8 were characterized by non-linear optical properties. The UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra for complexes 1–9 have been researched. The solid state photoluminescent properties for complexes 1, 3, 4, 6, 8 and 9 at ambient and low temperatures were also studied.
