Radio frequency birefringence in south polar ice and implications for neutrino reconstruction

► Birefringent effect is measured in the lower half of the ice sheet at South Pole. ► Difference with Dome Fuji results suggests different local ice characteristics. ► Indications are seen of an asymmetry in absorption. ► Frequency-dependent echo returns are seen for several intermediate depths. ► ARA experiment is expected to provide additional measurements.
