On turbulent fragmentation and the origin of the stellar IMF

► Mass spectra for clumps, cores and stars derived using turbulent fragmentation. ► CMF is steep for higher mass; turnover to lower mass is sensitive to gas temperature. ► The CMF knee portends a characteristic temperature controlled by cooling processes. ► With an SFE between 5-15%, stellar mass function similar to the IMF is obtained.
