A brief introduction to photonic crystal fibres for astronomical instrumentalists

The basic characteristics of photonic crystal fibres are reviewed and compared with those of traditional fibres currently used in many astronomical instruments. The two main mechanisms for light-guidance are described. Potential applications in astronomy are discussed.
