Isotopical labeling studies were performed on a Pt/YSZ electrochemical catalyst for operando investigating mechanisms involved in the electrochemical activation of propane combustion. This study clearly confirms the sacrificial promoter model and highlights the significant contribution of a surface oxygen exchange mechanism in the catalytic rate both under open circuit and anodic polarization conditions.

► Operando investigation of EPOC mechanism using 18O2 on Pt/YSZ
► Propane deep oxidation rate strongly electropromoted upon anodic polarizations
► Important production of C16O18O was evidenced due to surface oxygen exchange.
► C16O2 production rate is a Faradaic process.
► Dual EPOC origin: sacrificial ionic promoters and oxygen exchange activation
