Bismuth (Bi), antimony (Sb) and Bi1-xSbx alloys were electrodeposited as anodes for Mg-ion batteries. At a 1 C rate, Bi0.88Sb0.12 and Bi showed the best cycling capabilities over 100 cycles while Sb failed to show appreciable capacity. SEM was used to study the changes in morphology as the anodes were electrochemically cycled, and XRD was used to characterize the magnesiation and demagnesiation of a Bi anode. A cyclic voltammogram of the electrochemical magnesiation/demagnesiation of Bi in a Mg(N(SO2CF3)2)2 / acetonitrile solution is presented as a proof-of-concept for compatibility of a Bi anode with conventional battery electrolytes.
► Electrodeposition of Bi, Sb and Bi1-xSbx alloy anodes for Mg ion battery was performed.
► At 1 C rates, Bi and Bi0.88Sb0.12 showed good cycling to 100 cycles
► The reversibility and the cycleability of the anodes were strongly dependent on the Bi content.
► Proof-of-concept was done by confirming the compatibility of Bi anode with ionic electrolyte.
