Anisotropic Ce13Fe80B7 powders were obtained for the first time by a modified hydrogenation– disproportionation–desorption–recombination (HDDR) process. It was found that the formation of anisotropy (the crystal texture) in the HDDR treated powders is related to a rod-like disproportionation microstructure. In order to further improve the coercivity, the HDDR treated powders were mixed with Ce72Cu28 powders and then were heated. As a result, the coercivity of the HDDR powders was enhanced from 400 Oe to 1450 Oe.
► Anisotropic Ce13Fe80B7 powders were obtained by a modified HDDR process.
► The formation of anisotropy was related to rod-like disproportionated products.
► The coercivity of the HDDR powders was improved by the diffusion of Ce72Cu28 alloys.
