Engineering complex topological memories from simple Abelian models

► A novel quantum memory using Abelian anyons is developed. ► This uses an advanced encoding, inspired by non-Abelian anyons. ► Errors are suppressed topologically, by means of single spin interactions. ► An implementation with current Josephson junction technology is proposed.
