Topology-induced phase transitions in totalistic cellular automata

► The stability of CA as a function of their underlying topology is investigated. ► The assessment procedure employs non-directional Lyapunov exponents that have been formulated in the nineties. ► It is shown that the underlying topology strongly affects the stability of CA. ► The repercussions of our findings on the establishment of CA-based models are discussed.
