Variational approximations in discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations with next-nearest-neighbor couplings

► A variational approximation is developed for a DNLS equation with extended coupling. ► Solutions with trivial and nontrivial phase distribution are accurately captured. ► Bifurcations of several species of solutions are investigated. ► Simple formula to predict critical bifurcation parameter values is derived.
