Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices: Mathematical analysis and analytical approximate formulae

► We consider the Gross-Pitaevskii equation as a model for the Bose-Einstein condensate. ► We prove the orbital stability of ground states and other mathematical properties. ► We present a new method for obtaining approximations for relevant physical magnitudes. ► We compare our approximations with numerical results reported in references.
