• A facile and rapid microwave-assisted synthesis of SnS2 for use as visible-light responsive photocatalysts.
• Evaluation of photocatalytic activity of SnS2 by photodegradation of methylene orange under visible light irradiation (455 nm).
• The good repeatability and stability of the photocatalytic behavior during five-cycle regeneration.
A facile and rapid microwave-assisted method was proposed to prepare tin disulfides (SnS2) for use as visible-light responsive photocatalysts with narrow band gap (∼2.1 eV). The photocatalytic activity of SnS2 was evaluated by photodegradation of methylene orange (MO) under visible light irradiation (455 nm of LED lamp). SnS2-M show enhanced photocatalytic activities compared to SnS2-A and conventional TiO2, and the mineralization ratio of MO by SnS2-M showed highest value (0.025) as compared to literature data. To confirm the photoreduction mechanism, Au or Ag dots as inhibitor for direct reduction of MO were decorated on the SnS2 surface.
