• Carbon dioxide injection and gas flow in a large-scale physical experiment are modelled.
• Gas pressure changes are mainly decided by the boundaries and earth stress.
• Gas concentration correlates with the areas of high earth stress.
• Stresses and deformations along three real directions are added and investigated.
• Coal matrix chronologically includes compressive and swelling deformation after CO2 injection.
In this paper, CO2 injection and subsequent gas flow in a coal matrix are modelled by a large-scale physical experiment. CO2 transport in porous media after gas injection is investigated in terms of three aspects: (1) the spatio-temporal volumetric strain of the coal matrix caused by CO2 injection; (2) gas pressure changes or redistribution in the coal matrix resulting from the gas flow; and (3) thermal analysis of the coal matrix during the injection process.
