Nasogastric Tube Placement in Rabbits

Emergency procedures and critical care of rabbits are similar to those of other mammals. However, special attention must be paid to the unique physiology and anatomy of the rabbit when performing life-saving measures on these patients. Nasogastric tube placement allows for continuous nutritional support as well as easy administration of fluids and medications. Nasogastric tube placement should be considered in critically ill rabbits when syringe feeding is not an option because of associated stress and/or oropharyngeal disease. Enteral feeding decreases the likelihood of colic, aids in stimulating the motility of the gastrointestinal tract, and reduces opportunities for bacterial translocation.
