The objective of this study was to determine the effects of dietary starch level on rumen and small intestine morphology and digesta pH in goats. Eighteen 9 months old Guanzhong wether goats (body weight 28.5 ± 1.6 kg) were randomly assigned to three treatments of dietary starch levels, (1) low starch (LS, 28%), (2) medium starch (MS, 35%) and (3) high starch (HS, 46%). After a 35-day experiment, MS diet significantly stimulated the development of rumen by increasing the papillae height and surface in both ventral and dorsal ruminal sac. MS diet also significantly enhanced villus height of jejunum. In contrast, HS diet significantly decreased the ruminal pH. Compared with its effect on rumen morphology, the starch level in diet did not significantly affect small intestine development. This study indicated that starch level in diet plays an important role in rumen development.
