In this study a theoretical formulation for Poisson’s ratio effects on tensile and compressive shaft capacity of driven piles in sand is developed. The theoretical formulation, which accounts for the existence of post-driving residual loads, is formulated based on a simple model for the pile–soil interface after pile installation and before pile axial loading. A computer program is written to facilitate the use of the theoretical formulation. The developed formulation shows that there is basis for consistent differences in tensile and compressive shaft capacity of driven piles in sand. Quantification of these differences has been made through numerical analysis and, parametric study has been also conducted to delineate all significant factors affecting the ratio of tensile to compressive shaft capacity of driven piles in sand.
