Integrating Community Health Simulation Scenarios: Experiences from the NCSBN National Simulation Study

Using simulation in nursing education is increasing as an active learning pedagogy that promotes critical thinking and enhances students' knowledge and skills. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) conducted a national simulation study to provide evidence of the educational outcomes of students having simulation replace varying amounts of clinical time in their nursing education. Schools chosen to conduct this study integrated simulation into clinical experiences in all courses in the curriculum. Incorporating simulation in a community health curriculum was a challenge because there was limited literature on the use of simulation in this area. As a member of the NCSBN National Simulation Study, this study team was among the first to implement community health simulations in the study. The National League of Nursing/Jeffries Simulation Framework served as the underpinnings of developing and integrating simulated community health scenarios. This article describes how the team successfully assessed, planned, and implemented realistic community health simulations that provided meaningful learning to students. Specific details of the challenges to create a realistic experience are discussed as well as the benefits gained through implementing community health simulations.
